Hey guys,
The topic I chose for my paper is how the trucking industry is going to have to cope with energy prices (develop CNG, more efficient diesels, etc.) and regulations. But I cannot for the life of me find the number (either in dollars or barrels) for how much oil the trucking industry consumes per year or per day. I scoured my textbook and google but couldn't come up with a thing.

Sorry. I am not help. I am just happy I am long out of college and no longer have to deal with such things.

I would try sources like:
They talk about fuel a lot, I don't know offhand if they have aggregate usage data though.

on that page I found the following details. I hope you can extrapolate from those figures how much oil they used once you figure out how much oil it takes to create a gallon of diesel and regular gas.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
52.3 billion gallons of fuel consumed by those trucks used for business purposes in 2011
37.2 billion gallons of diesel fuel
14.8 billion gallons of gasoline
The trucking industry spent $143.4 billion buying diesel fuel in 2011 and is on pace to spend $150.4 billion in 2012.
Diesel fuel is often the second highest expense for motor carriers after labor and can be as much as 20% of total operating costs.

Hopefully you can use some of these numbers

Good question, I too am working on a college paper. My thought would be find the avg. MPG of trucks and multiply that by an estimate of total miles driven (from a reliable source). Truckers have to log their miles so finding a total should be within the realm of possibility.

Aerodynamics is one big one. Here's an article on a modified truck that might help.

When you're done, you should post a condensed version of that essay here, actually, should be an interesting read.

Also, take a page from wal-mart's research....they spent a bunch on that. here is their future:
they even say: Microturbine-powered series hybrid electric drive train is clean, efficient and fuel flexible

Yeah I might actually do that. I'll decide if it's oppo worthy after it's finished.

Also, I can't remember what the hell those fin type things they put on the back of the container for better aero. I saw about 5-6 trucks with them last time I was on the highway for a good bit of time. Knew I should have written it down.

The Energy Information Administration is your friend. They have a great website with lots of data on it. If you need any other help let me know. I work on this stuff for a living.

http://www.truckinfo.net/trucking/stats… Stats
How much fuel does the trucking industry consume?
The trucking industry accounts for 12.8% of all the fuel purchased in the U.S. Compared to automobiles and light vehicles accounted for 63% of the fuel purchased.
Now...I just wish I could finish MY college paper that was due two days ago. LOL
